Happy New Year! This is your time to transition to your best, most authentic self.

Let’s resolve to start the year using our greatest assets: ourselves! We need to deeply understand our talents, qualities and experiences to transform our own lives and communities. Real resolutions work when self definition and true self are aligned with action.

"Resolution to Reality"

I heard from Carole just as the old year ended and 2013 was knocking on our doors. The question of “Resolutions?” was being asked on every news channel as New York’s famous ball dropped.

“2012 was the year my New Year’s Resolution worked!” said Carole. “Until then, I had based my resolutions on what I should do to be the person that made someone else happy. I was trying to meet their definition and expectations.”

It’s like you said in our work together, Bobbie,” she continued. “‘Woulda, coulda, shoulda, got you nada!’ I never kept a New Year's Resolution until I began the process of self-definition at Rise Up. No intention was aligned with who I was until I knew who I was. How could I possibly fulfill a promise to myself that was not based on myself? It would never work, and then I would feel like I failed again and again."

Featured Exercise:

Begin to DEFINE YOURSELF

Go to as natural a setting as possible to begin these mind-body-spirit exercises!

Find that quiet, still place: a park bench, a blanket at the beach or your favorite space to curl up. Outside, the air changes, your mind opens, you breathe more deeply and your RIGHT BRAIN (center of creative, abstract thinking) functions better helping to create those magical, “Ah Ha” moments.

  1. GATHER YOURSELF: centered and grounded, we get the full benefit of any exercise. Then, take three full breaths: in through your nose and out through your mouth. Picture that breath as a blue stream of the freshest mountain or sea air invigorating while it calms you. Now, reverse that breathing process and inhale through your mouth and out your nose. Your MIND and BODY will relax and focus letting go of anxiety, stress or the nagging feeling of “have-to.”
  2. Picture the time you felt MOST YOURSELF, most alive and most comfortable in your own skin. (Many of us remember a moment of childhood and wonder why it was so long ago that we felt this wonderful way.) Don’t worry or have words of explanation - it’s the picture that counts! MEDITATE on the picture; enjoy!
